Payment Methods Survey of Companies 2025

This year, the Swiss National Bank is conducting its third payment methods survey of companies in Switzerland.

Around 2,000 companies will be surveyed representatively across all language regions, sizes and selected industries. In addition, selected large retailers and public transport companies will be surveyed separately on their payment method acceptance. These companies typically have many points of contact with the general public on a daily basis and are therefore especially important for day-to-day payments.

The survey provides the SNB with important information on economic agents' acceptance and use of payment methods. The results of the survey thus help the SNB to fulfil its statutory tasks with regard to the supply and distribution of cash and to cashless payments.

    • Representative sample: Providers of everyday goods and services
    • Selected sample: Large retailers and public transport companies

    Sampling procedure

    • Representative sample: Sample drawn from the sampling frame used for company surveys at the Swiss Federal Statistical Office
    • Selected sample: Selection of companies based on market shares

    Survey period

    Mid-May to mid-July 2025

  • The Swiss National Bank conducts the country's monetary policy as an independent central bank. Under the National Bank Act, it is tasked with ensuring the supply and distribution of cash in Switzerland. Additionally, it is entrusted with facilitating and securing the operation of cashless payment systems. By performing these tasks, the SNB creates the necessary conditions for the public to be able to choose their preferred method of payment for each transaction.
