The current banknote series

The 50-franc note

For the current series the SNB adopted an entirely new design approach. The theme of the banknote series is ‘The many facets of Switzerland’.

The banknotes

Each denomination depicts a typical Swiss characteristic, represented by means of a key motif. Each characteristic is illustrated with an activity, a location in Switzerland and other design elements. The banknotes no longer feature images of individuals.

Core design elements of the current banknotes

The current banknotes explore some of our country’s many facets: organisational talent, creativity, wealth of experiences, humanitarian tradition, scientific expertise and communicative flair. These six sides are exemplified in an array of design elements. Some motifs recur on all of the notes; these are core design features of the current banknote series.

Hand

The hand illustrates the theme of each note through an action.

Globe

The shimmering globe reflects how Switzerland sees itself as part of an interconnected world. In the sequence of notes from 1000 francs to 10 francs, the earth rotates once on its axis and passes through one full day.

Location

Each note depicts a particular side of Switzerland. Together, the six notes reflect the diversity of our country, which is known for its organisational prowess, for its vibrant cultural scene, for the wealth of experiences it offers, as well as for its humanitarian tradition and its track record as a research hub and place of dialogue.

Object

Each note depicts an object related to the relevant key motif. The key motifs of the six notes are time, light, wind, water, matter and language.

Security concept

The current banknotes meet Switzerland’s traditionally high security standards for its currency. They have numerous security features – some new, some tried and tested.

These features are incorporated into the note’s innovative, three-layer substrate (Durasafe®) with a range of technologies. The current series offers a unique combination of complex security features and sophisticated design, making it difficult to counterfeit.

Although the design elements differ from note to note, the security concept is identical across the entire series. The security features described here are based on those of the 100-franc note.

GLOBE TEST

Feature:

In the centre of the note is a depiction of a shimmering globe.
