Regional economic relations
The delegates for regional economic relations represent the SNB in the various regions of Switzerland. Their task is twofold: to keep the Governing Board informed of economic developments in their individual regions through their contacts to companies in those regions, and, as ambassadors of the SNB, to explain its policies to their contacts in the regional economy, local officials, associations, and also to the general public.

Regional Economic Councils
Regional Economic Councils support the delegates in monitoring economic developments in their region and explaining the SNB’s policy. The Regional Economic Councils are made up of three or four members, depending on the size and economic structure of the region. Members are elected by the Bank Council from various sectors of the local economy for four-year terms. They meet the delegate for regional economic relations, generally on a quarterly basis, to analyse the economic situation and the effects of monetary policy in their region, and the results are reported to the Governing Board.
Publications
The SNB’s delegates for regional economic relations are constantly in touch with a large number of companies from different industries. Their reports are a valuable source of information for the SNB in assessing the economic situation. A summary based on the results of the discussions conducted with these companies is published regularly in the Quarterly Bulletin in the section titled ‘Business cycle signals’ (formerly ‘Business cycle trends’). The Quarterly Bulletin also occasionally includes special reports on current topics.
Business cycle signals
On a quarterly basis, the delegates hold around 240 discussions with company representatives on the current and future economic situation. The results of these talks are published in the SNB’s Quarterly Bulletin in the section titled ‘Business cycle signals’ (until 2010, ‘The economic situation from the vantage point of the delegates for regional economic relations’ and until March 2017, ‘Business cycle trends’).

Special reports
If required, the SNB also conducts special surveys on topical issues, e.g. the surveys conducted in 2010, 2011 and 2015 on the effects of Swiss franc appreciation.
