SNB planning new cash logistics centre
The Swiss National Bank has purchased a plot of land in Bülach in the canton of Zurich on which it intends to build a new cash logistics centre. In order for the SNB to supply and distribute cash securely, it requires modern buildings and cutting-edge technical infrastructure. The SNB will therefore move its cash infrastructure from its Zurich head office to Bülach. The cash logistics centre, which will be designed to meet the cash supply and distribution needs of the future, is expected to open in the early 2030s.
The ability to use cash is seen as a basic necessity by the Swiss population. According to SNB surveys of private individuals, 95% of the population want cash to continue to be available as a payment method.1 In order to fulfil its statutory mandate of ensuring the supply and distribution of cash, the SNB is continuously investing in modern infrastructure. It has also begun developing the tenth banknote series. In doing so, it is making sure that Swiss banknotes continue to meet the latest standards with regard to functionality and security over the long term.
