NEOS - A timely indicator for economic outlook based on Swiss newspaper articles

Summary

This note presents the News-based Economic Outlook for Switzerland (NEOS), a timely indicator for the sentiment regarding the economic outlook based on a comprehensive sample of Swiss newspaper articles. The indicator combines machine learning methods and large language models to assess macroeconomic developments in real time. We illustrate the use of NEOS by showing how U.S. tariff announcements shifted the sentiment regarding the economic outlook in Swiss news.
