Sa politique en matière de sûretés définit les garanties acceptées de sorte à protéger le bilan de la BNS tout en permettant une mise à disposition fonctionnelle, efficace et transparente de liquidités. Le panier SNB General Collateral (SNB GC), qui se distingue par ses hautes exigences qualitatives, son large éventail de titres et son caractère international, est déterminant pour les opérations servant à mettre en oeuvre la politique monétaire ou à assurer le bon fonctionnement du trafic des paiements. Il fait également figure de norme en matière de sûretés sur le marché interbancaire suisse des pensions de titres. Le fait de disposer à la fois de cette norme commune et d'une infrastructure intégrée facilite l'utilisation de sûretés et, partant, une mise en oeuvre efficace de la politique monétaire et le bon fonctionnement des systèmes de paiement.
