Environmental management
Since 1996, the SNB has been pursuing an environmental management policy and continually striving to lower its resource usage and carbon emissions.
The SNB environmental strategy is embodied in its ecological charter, which contains specific principles and guidelines on the sustainable use of resources, as well as environmental targets, for a six year period. The yearly environmental report gives the results of the SNB’s environmental performance.
In 2000, the SNB conducted an analysis of the environmental impact of Swiss banknotes. The product environmental performance evaluation assessed their entire life cycle, from the harvesting of cotton, through all the important production, transport, storage and treatment processes, to the banknotes’ final incineration (‘from the cradle to the grave’).
