Jean-Pierre Danthine was born in Havelange, Namur, Belgium in 1950. He earned a Master’s Degree in Economics at the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium and a PhD in Economics at the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From 1980 to 2009, Jean-Pierre Danthine was Professor of Macroeconomics and Finance at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. He taught at Columbia University, New York, and was visiting professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Université Laval, Québec, as well as the universities of Aix-Marseille, Toulon and Dijon.

Jean-Pierre Danthine is a Fellow of the European Economic Association and member of the Academia Europaea. He was a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London, and Associate Editor of Macroeconomic Dynamics and Finance Research Letters. He held the position of President of the Academic Council of the Swiss Training Center for Investment Professionals, was a member of the Council of the European Economic Association and a member of the Scientific Councils of the Centre pour la recherche économique et ses applications, Paris, the Centre de Recherche en Economie et en Statistique, Paris, and the Centre de Recerca en Economia Internacional, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Moreover, he was a member of the Economics Commission of the Belgian Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique and member of the Executive Committee of the Centre of Money and Banking Studies, Geneva.

From the year of its foundation in 2006 until 2009, Jean-Pierre Danthine was Managing Director of the Swiss Finance Institute, which collaborates closely with the leading Swiss universities, aiming to enhance cutting-edge, market-oriented research and teaching in the fields of banking and finance. He was formerly the Director of the International Center for Financial Asset Management and Engineering, Lausanne and Geneva, Vice-Rector of the University of Lausanne, Chairman of its Département d‘économétrie et d‘économie politique and Director of its Institute of Banking and Financial Management, now the Institute of Banking and Finance. He was also a member of the Executive Committee of CEPR, of the Macroeconomic Policy Group of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), Brussels, and of the Scientific Council of the European Science Foundation Network in Financial Markets. Furthermore, he was Associate Editor of the European Economic Review, the Journal of Empirical Finance and the Revue Finance.

His publications have appeared in Econometrica, in the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Economic Theory, the Journal of Public Economics, the European Economic Review, the Journal of Monetary Economics and many other journals.

With effect from the beginning of 2010, the Swiss Federal Council has appointed him a member of the Swiss National Bank‘s Governing Board and Head of Department III (Financial Markets, Banking Operations and Information Technology).

Jean-Pierre Danthine holds dual Belgian/Swiss citizenship, is married and has two children.
