Behind the scenes at the National Bank
Organisationally, the National Bank is divided into three Departments. Department I has the task of preparing monetary policy decisions. Department II is responsible for issuing banknotes and for
overseeing payment systems. It also monitors developments in the financial system. Department III implements monetary policy. It concludes repo transactions and conducts foreign currency transactions. Departments I and III are located in Zurich, while
most of Department II is based in Berne. The Governing Board is responsible for the management of the National Bank. Its three members are each in charge of one of the three Departments.
The National Bank also has representatives in various regions of Switzerland. It observes and reports on economic developments. The National Bank employs around 600 people, which makes it one of the smallest central banks in Europe.
