The banks' reserves or liquidity are the link between the banks and the National Bank. For in order to top up their reserves, the banks have to turn to the National Bank and borrow from it.
By providing the banks with reserves or liquidity, the National Bank has a decisive influence on the banks' money creation and the volume of payment instruments circulating in the economy.
